AUDIENCE

Civil engineers in consulting and government desiring specialized training using Python and FLAC to conduct site response and ground motion selection and modification work

DURATION

12 hours total of synchronous hands-on training separated over three days in a 1-week period; instructor will be available throughout the instruction period for technical support and to answer questions

  • Presentation PDF files

  • Digital PDF library of related references

  • Completed FLAC project and Python/Jupyter files

  • Multiple custom FLAC/FISH and Python scripts for conducting site response and ground motion selection and modification related work

  • Unlisted YouTube playlist of all course videos during and shortly after course completion

METHOD

Zoom video conferencing used for delivering presentations and providing computer-to-computer assistance during Python and FLAC® tutorials

Shared Dropbox used during course for storing presentations, modeling files, and references

A full FLAC 8.1 version will be available during the duration of the course (provided courtesy of Itasca Consulting Group Inc.)

Day 1

INTRODUCTION

  • Course summary

  • Python Primer in Google Colaboratory

  • FISH programming Primer in FLAC®

  • Presentation: Ground motion selection and modification techniques

Day 2

SITE RESPONSE

  • Tutorial 1: Amplitude scaling of ground motions using Python

  • Presentation: Earthquake site response in FLAC®

  • Tutorial 2: 1D total stress site response analysis in FLAC®

Day 3

ADVANCED TOPICS

  • Presentation: Effective stress constitutive models in FLAC®

  • Tutorial 3: Cyclic single element response using PMSand and PM4Silt

  • Presentation: FFT-scaling deconvolution using FLAC® and Python

  • Tutorial 4: 1D effective stress site response analysis in FLAC®

Each day will be split into short presentations and longer analysis tutorials using Python and FLAC®.

During the 1-week training period, the instructor will be available for followup questions.
