course DETAILS

AUDIENCE

Practicing civil engineers in consulting and government desiring specialized training using FLAC® and Python to conduct site responses analyses

DURATION

12 hours total of synchronous hands-on training separated over three days in a 1½-week period; instructor will be available throughout the instruction period for technical support and to answer questions

  • Digital PDF library of related references

  • Completed FLAC project and Python/Jupyter files

  • Multiple custom FLAC/FISH and Python scripts for conducting site response analysis work

  • Unlisted YouTube playlist of all course videos

METHOD

Zoom video conferencing used for delivering presentations and providing computer-to-computer assistance during Python and FLAC® tutorials

Shared Dropbox used during course for storing presentations, modeling files, and references

A full FLAC 8.1 version will be available during the duration of the course (provided courtesy of Itasca Consulting Group Inc.)

Day 1

INTRODUCTION

  • Course summary

  • Python Primer in Google Colaboratory

  • Tutorial 1: Python scripts for earthquake engineering

  • Tutorial 2: FLAC FISH scripts for automation of FLAC analyses

Day 2

SITE RESPONSE

  • Presentation: Earthquake site response in FLAC®

  • Tutorial 3: 1D site response analysis in FLAC®

  • Tutorial 4: Suite of 1D site response analyses in FLAC®

Day 3

ADVANCED TOPICS

  • Presentation: Advanced constitutive modeling in FLAC®

  • Tutorial 5: 1D complex site response analysis in FLAC®

  • Tutorial 6: 2D site response analysis in FLAC®

Each day will be split into short presentations and longer analysis tutorials using and FLAC® and Python.

During the training period, the instructor will be available for followup questions.
