DURATION

16 hours total of synchronous hands-on training separated over four days in a 1½-week period; instructor will be available throughout the instruction period for technical support and to answer questions

CLASS SIZE

Size capped at 15 participants to enhance student-instructor interaction

METHOD

Zoom video conferencing used for delivering presentations and providing computer-to-computer assistance during FLAC® modeling tutorials

Shared Dropbox used during course for storing presentations, modeling files, and references

A full FLAC 8.1 version will be available during the duration of the course (provided courtesy of Itasca Consulting Group Inc.)

Day 1

CONSTITUTIVE MODELING I

  • Presentation: Introduction

  • Presentation: Constitutive modeling in FLAC®

  • Tutorial 2-1: Triaxial loading with a Mohr-Coulomb element

  • Tutorial 2-2: Simple shear loading with a Mohr-Coulomb element

Day 2

CONSTITUTIVE MODELING II

  • Presentation: Constitutive modeling in FLAC® (continued)

  • Tutorial 3-1: UBCHYST material parameter calibration

  • Presentation: Constitutive modeling in FLAC® (continued)

  • Tutorial 4-1: PM4Sand material parameter calibration

Day 3

2-D ANALYSES OF EMBANKMENT DAMS AND SLOPES

  • Presentation: Mesh generation in FLAC®

  • Tutorial 5-1: Numerical mesh development of an embankment dam

  • Presentation: Coupled mechanical-fluid modeling in FLAC®

  • Tutorial 5-2: Calculation of state-of-stress of an embankment dam

  • Tutorial 5-3: Gravity-driven deformations of an embankment dam

Day 4

SEISMIC ANALYSES OF EMBANKMENT DAMS AND SLOPES

  • Tutorial 6-1: Seismic analysis of an embankment dam

  • Presentation: Dynamic modeling in FLAC®

  • Presentation: Documentation

  • Tutorial 6-1 (continued)

Each day will be split into short presentations and longer analysis tutorials using FLAC®.

During the-week training period, the instructor will be available for followup questions regarding FLAC® and numerical modeling. Supporting video presentations and additional tutorials will be made available during the training period to further support participants' learning.
