AUDIENCE

Practicing civil engineers in consulting and government desiring specialized training using FLAC to analyze embankment dams and slopes

DURATION

16 hours total of synchronous hands-on training separated over four days in a 1½-week period; instructor will be available throughout the instruction period for technical support and to answer questions

METHOD

Zoom video conferencing used for delivering presentations and providing computer-to-computer assistance during FLAC® modeling tutorials

Shared Dropbox used during course for storing presentations, modeling files, and references

A full FLAC 8.1 version will be available during the duration of the course (provided courtesy of Itasca Consulting Group Inc.)

  • Presentation: Mechanical-fluid modeling in FLAC®

Day 2

2-D ANALYSES OF EMBANKMENT DAMS AND SLOPES

  • Tutorial 2: Calculation of state-of-stress of an embankment dam

  • Presentation: Constitutive modeling

  • Tutorial 3: Gravity-driven deformations of an embankment dam

Day 3

ADVANCED CONSTITUTIVE MODELING

  • Presentation: Constitutive modeling (continued)

  • Tutorial 4: UBCHYST material parameter calibration

  • Presentation: Constitutive modeling (continued)

  • Tutorial 5: PM4Sand material parameter calibration

Day 4

SEISMIC ANALYSES OF EMBANKMENT DAMS AND SLOPES

  • Presentation: Earthquake engineering modeling

  • Tutorial 6: Seismic analysis of an embankment dam

Each day will be split into short presentations and longer analysis tutorials using FLAC®.

During the-week training period, the instructor will be available for followup questions regarding FLAC® and numerical modeling.
