PRIMARY AUDIENCE

Graduate students in geotechnical earthquake engineering desiring a kickstart in using FLAC®.

(Practicing civil engineers welcomed; may prefer other two training courses focused more on engineering practice)

DURATION

12 hours total of synchronous hands-on training separated over three days in a -week period; instructor will be available throughout the instruction period for technical support and to answer questions

  • Digital PDF library of related references

  • Completed FLAC project files and multiple custom FLAC/FISH scripts

  • Unlisted YouTube playlist of all course videos

METHOD

Zoom video conferencing used for delivering presentations and providing computer-to-computer assistance during FLAC® tutorials

Shared Dropbox used during course for storing presentations, modeling files, and references

A full FLAC 8.1 version will be available during the duration of the course (provided courtesy of Itasca Consulting Group Inc.)

Day 1

INTRODUCTION

  • Course summary

  • Presentation: FLAC® basics and mesh generation

  • Tutorial 1: Numerical mesh development of complex slope geometry

  • Presentation: Mechanical-fluid modeling in FLAC®

  • Tutorial 2: Calculation of state-of-stress of complex slope geometry

Day 2

CONSTITUTIVE MODELING

  • Presentation: Constitutive modeling in FLAC®

  • Tutorial 3: Drained cyclic simple shear simulation with UBCHYST in FLAC®

  • Tutorial 4: Undrained cyclic simple shear simulation with PM4Sand in FLAC®

Day 3

ADVANCED TOPICS

  • Presentation: Earthquake engineering modeling in FLAC®

  • Tutorial 5: Earthquake analysis of complex slope geometry

  • Presentation: Soil-structure modeling in FLAC®

  • Tutorial 6: Earthquake analysis of reinforced complex slope geometry

Each day will be split into short presentations and longer analysis tutorials using FLAC®.

During the-week training period, the instructor will be available for followup questions regarding FLAC® and numerical modeling.
